Somehow these things looked more frightening when I saw them on a snowy black and white TV, and when I see these in color, they seem less frightening, in fact, the Horta looks like a dropped pizza.
I laughed pretty hard when I read this. That said, I'm now gonna put on my "obsessive-fanboy" face (waitaminute - it looks just like mine. No, it's a Shatner mask...wait, why do I have a knife in my hand and am chasing after Jamie Lee Curtis...) and say that some of those weren't cheesy.
The Melkotian and the Salt Vampire still creep me out. (The Mugatu, though, is painful...what's cheesier than a man-in-gorilla-suit? Man-in-pink-horned-gorilla-suit) What about the Providers from the Gamesters of Triskelion (aka the brains-in-a-jar)? Or Sylvia and Korob's true form at the end of Catspaw? Or Vaal, the big snake computer? Tribbles are *not* cheesy...they're nice, and soft, and they make a pleasant sound.
Besides, we all know where the real cheesiness was - the human characters. Space Hippies!
You know that sad thing about that? That's a decent character actor saddled with that horrible part. (Then again, he did actually sign up for the role). Charles Napier - The lead singer of "The Good Ol' Boys" in the Blues Brothers ("You're gonna have a hard time tryin' to eat corn on the cob with no f***ing teeth!") and the voice of Jay Sherman's boss on "The Critic".
