I vaguely remember when this came out but I never got to the art houses to see it. So a perfect rental candidate.
The film gets comparisons to The Full Monty, and the subject is similar: northern English industrial town has main industrial employer shutting down. In this case, it's a coal pit. The mining ("Collier") brass band which has been playing for over 100 years is threatened too. They can compete for a national brass band championship, though.
BO is a drama, unlike FM - the hardship and working-class aspects aren't really played for laughs. Ewan McGregor is pretty good, showing that he has range if given a decent script. Pete Postlethwait is the elderly and ailing conductor who focuses on music over his relationship with his son.

bonacorsi got drippy during the ending. One of the actors looked naggingly familiar; eventually I realized that he played the nurse character in Shakespeare in Love.
