Yesterday I visited one of the campuses I'm considering for an MBA. I wanted to sit in on one of the classes to see what the curriculum and interaction was like.

...it was on capital markets. How stocks and bonds work, and who buys them. I could have taught the class.
It doesn't make the program worthless, but it would have been more interesting had I not been able to snooze through the whole thing.

Is the idea behind the MBA to get the certification or to learn new stuff? If the former, aren't there "accelerated" MBA programs for people who already have lots of on-the-job experience in business and don't need to sit through the baby classes? (If the latter, then there's little point in sitting through the baby classes in any event.)

The program I visited yesterday is an accelerated one; the particular class just happened to be on subjects I already knew. Most of the people in the class weren't finance types though, so it was new to them. I'm sure there are other classes that would teach me things.

Personally though, I'd mainly be doing it for the certification rather than to learn. Lots of companies are now requiring an MBA and screening my resume out, disregarding my actual job experience.

Can you test out of the classes you already know?

If you can't test out of a boring class, I suppose the silver lining would be an "A" that didn't make you work for it.

Does the program offer the opportunity to challenge the class?

Have you considered paying for the program by working as an instructor?
