Some of this is rooted in my childhood - being a short child in elementary school when "Short People" came out. Saying "it's a parody" did not cut it with me when every taller child sang it at me for months.

But beyond the turgid drama of my childhood traumas, I just don't like his singing style or his lyrics. The only time I've been amused was the spoof in Family Guy (Randy Newman sings what he sees - "Red headed lady, Reaching for an apple. Gonna take a bite, nope, nope.")

Which is one reason why I was so annoyed that Monk went to Newman for the theme song in season two. They had a perfectly good score; why ruin it with Newman?

I guess I was a little older when he became popular. I liked his work, and saw it as funny/satire. The first song of his I heard was "Red Necks", which was about hypocrisy by Northern elites concerning racism.

I agree--dumb move. But I usually record the episodes on my DVR and fast-forward through the opening titles, so I rarely have to listen to it anyway.

Have you seen the Monk episode with the TV show, and the comment by the TV guys about the fan uproar when they changed their theme song?
