The Slow Food people had broadsheets printed up with a ten-point manifesto. One of the points was "Never eat anything your great-grandmother wouldn't recognize as food."

Taken literally, I violate that all the time. None of my great-grandmothers would recognize arugula, tomatillos, purple potatoes...

Can I refuse to eat some things my great-grandmothers did recognize as food? I have no desire to eat lutefisk.

One set of great-greats were raising the kids with the philosophy that if you're hungry but unwilling to eat bread with butter, then you're not really hungry. Farm-folk ftw. I'd be stuck with dill + cheese + rye bread.

A different set of great-greats were running a health spa in Switzerland before immigrating and becoming farmers. Want some mineral water with your whole grains and yogurt?

Could we roll that back to grandmas? 'Cause my grandma loves my purple mashed pototoes at Thanksgiving. (Marbling for the white ones FTW.)
