And since the real problem is that Americans spend way too much money on cars (something like 20% of consumer spending), this will probably do more harm than good. The inconvenient truth is that the auto business is too big, it will have to shrink... and there's no painless way to do it.
Except for Ford trucks, I avoid American vehicles because they are just junk.
With all the government money they have gotten for bailouts in the past, why should they bother wasting time and research on making things customers want so they can get customer money and keep with the market demands. Everyone saw the gas prices going up. All the other car manufacturers realized they needed to sell more fuel efficient cars. But, the American 3 instead wanted to fight and argue that it wasn't fair. They shouldn't have to make cars that are cleaner and more fuel efficient. So they didn't start looking in this direction until nothing they had was selling!
What idiots! Our government has already bailed them out enough. If they are too incompetent to run a business in modern times, then so be it!
Let's put that money into education and the SBA to create jobs and a long term healthy economy!
