I went in for an eye exam yesterday. It was actually my first in about two and a half years - I didn't maintain eye coverage last year on my own dime as it's freakin' expensive, and I was just about to have an exam when I got laid off. So, yeah. I found a local guy on the plan in SoMa.

It's a very trendy industrial place: concrete floors, visible ducts, techno music. Not really my style. But the guy seemed competent, which is the crucial thing.

My main comment going in was that my right eye seems to have weakened dramatically. And the test showed... that yes, this is true. In fact my right eye is not legal driving vision!

I had glasses most of my life until getting my eyes burned nine years ago. I'm not thrilled with the idea of going back (even to light lenses). I spent much of yesterday in denial. What I will probably do: get an updated pair of driving glasses and prescription sunglasses for the car. That way I can be safe & legal while driving. Then maybe next year when my benefits roll around I'll look at full-time glasses.

Aargh.

Well, you know... If it is just the right eye that needs correction for driving, they still make monocles. Just think of the accessorizing.

Dang; tafelspitz beat me to it -- the monocle idea is just spiffy, and I've always wanted to do it, myself.

I know you can special order monocles from just about any of the major spectacle manufacturers -- oh, yes you can!

(And I'm annoyed, now: I deleted my Kenneth Mars / Inspector Kemp LJ icon a while ago. Nerts.)

Hey, you could always wear just one contact lens. Just sayin'.

However, your experience makes me think I may continue to forego the laser treatment. I am also wary of trying to do orthodontia at this time since I've heard nasty rumors of the teeth drifting back to their original positions about 3-4 years after the braces come off

My eyes (7 years) and my sister's eyes (15 years) are still going great after laser RK.
