Estimate, obviously. Although there are some of you (cough [livejournal.com profile] hrj) who might have the exact measurements already.
...yes, my OCD made me go measure our shelves.

I need more shelves. Since the question itself was "how many books" I had to account for the double-deep and the stacked and the books that currently don't have shelves...

*sigh*

It works out that I have approximately twice as many linear feet of books as I do shelves.

*headdesk*

In my efforts to reduce the amount of weight my house carries, I have recently culled my bookshelves and given away about 1/3rd of what I had last year, and although some are still stacked double deep, I'm pleased to say that I'm now down to about 100 feet of books on hand. I'm not psychologically able to get rid of too many at once, but I'm now trying to give away many of my computer books, but I suspect most of my art books and crafts and sewing manuals will still be here when I die!

Since many of my books are still in boxes, or on my rotating book rack, it's hard to estimate beyond "too damn many".

I have a feeling that I should pretty much keep only books I read once a year or more often, or hard-to-find reference works. This would cut our acreage in half at least. But finding the time to sort them is another matter entirely!

Over 300...

And I *do* cull them regularly!

Less than 300 feet, but that is because with the split I can no longer count [livejournal.com profile] clovis_t's books. However, unless something goes wrong with visas etc. I'll be employed in July, so may be able to start acquiring books again...

Oy. ~15 feet per 6 foot high book shelf (x14), ~24 feet per 8 foot high book shelf (x3), ~30 feet per paperback book shelf (x3), plus 3 other oddly sized book shelves that I don't remember exact dimensions on. >.< I really didn't want to contemplate that figure!

Oops, forgot to count the fiction. The 200-300 ft was just for non-fiction. With fiction, I move easily into the top category.

I did a back-of-the-envelope calculation at one point this year (tres boring faculty meeting) and decided I probably have about 2500 books, at least half of them in boxes. But I'm too lazy to try to convert that back into bookshelves right now.

about a hundred feet...but that's just in the three closest rooms...

He's delusional. About 200 feet is stored in the house. I know because I was calculating custom storage in our spare bedroom/library. Another 200 feet or so are stored in the shed and the storage cubbies in the house. My big summer project is to catalog and hopefully sell/giveaway most of the stored books.... possibly over his dead body.

Of course, we just moved and haven't had time to put up shelves for any of the pleasure reading books, just the almost 300 feet of reference books! We figure that only half of our books are currently unpacked!
