Film review: The Black Swan

Another Olde Tyme Swashbucklin' Movie based on a popular Sabatini novel. Starring Tyrone Power and Maureen O'Hara.

...yawn. The plot was cliched from start to finish - lovable rogue with heart of gold falls in love with noble's daughter who hates him at the start and marries him at the end; effete politicians who dislike the noble pirates at best and collude with foreign enemies at worst; gratuitous use of "naval" terms on land; haphazard looting and brawls over treasure; racial and sexual stereotyping; and much, much, more! It also left some threads hanging that should have been resolved.

Tyrone Power, who was so good in a similar role in Zorro, slept his way through this one. I am very glad it was a rental.

I'm underwhelmed by Fool, and it's been languishing on my bedside table with only a couple of chapters read. Instead, I'm really enjoying Living With Ghosts by Kari Sperring, a well-written fantasy with a swashbuckling feel to it that recently came out in paperback.
