I'd be curious how repeating a nonsense word/sound would compare. People can control/process pain through breath and vocalizing; which is basically what's behind those Lamaze lessons. Sounds like they may be hitting on some of the brain activity involved in that--rather than curse words specifically having some sort of magical pain relieving ability.

Now they need to repeat the study with faux-swear words, like frell, frak, fershlugginer... Why so many f-words, one wonders?
