My laptop wouldn't boot this morning. It's not drawing any juice when plugged in.
The wife did some research and thinks the motherboard needs repair/replacement. The laptop's about two years old and this is apparently a relatively common (but not cheap) thing. She's got a call in already.

The timing would never be good, but just before school re-starts with papers due, is certainly less than ideal. Thanks, Murphy.

Edited to add: I don't think the power connection is the primary problem. The laptop was off last night and fully charged when I unplugged it. It will not boot when plugged or un-. I noted that it was not drawing juice as an indicator that something is Deeply Wrong with the system.

You and RAT: same problem at the same time!
I guess they're right: it's common. Sorry about the hard luck!

I just had to buy a new AC adapter when I had this problem. The connection loosened up over the years which is why it wouldn't charge.

I don't think the power is the problem (see edited main entry)

You should let Brion take a look at it, it is what he does for a living :)

What else can happen is that the socket that connects the AC Adapter to the motherboard can come loose. If you wiggle it with the AC adapter plugged in, and it shows that the board is getting a charge, then that's a good indicator that the Mboard is good, but just needs the terminals resoldered. You can also put a volt meter at the end of the adapter to make sure you're getting some voltage (or stick it in your mouth to check for a zap, but I don't recommend it =).

Use a good guy to resolder the terminal, since it can be easily messed up by someone who is clumsy or doesn't know what they're doing (I had to repair a botched job in the past, and it's not fun).
