Turgid Drama... With Soup!

Last night I made a decent, if uninspiring, soup with chicken, parsley root, mustard greens and a number of other things. I served it out and we went to watch an episode of John Adams.

When I went back into the kitchen an hour later, the soup was still bubbling away on the still-on burner.

It didn't scorch, just reduced to the point of no broth.

It must be the phase of the moon or something. I set some potatoes to boil, and sometime later realized there was no happy bubbling noise coming from the kitchen. They hadn't dried out, but I'm pretty sure it was minutes away from disaster.
