Something Positive totally nailed it.
On both sides, says the guy who spent hours playing on his Atari 2600. And who now has Adventure on the phone as a free app.

Date: 2012-11-09 01:48 am (UTC)The closest analogues to these are a certain breed of mobile games, designed to play in a short amount of time, with a noticeable ramp-up in difficulty, and usually with a bunch of achievements. It's the last one that keeps people coming back, which gives a similar feel to reaching level X of some of the old games. (Bit.Trip series, Squareball, Super Hexagon)
(And of course, the arcade games that still hold up: Robotron, Joust, Tempest, etc)
Naturally, though, the comic's clearly aimed squarely at me :)
