Cocktail of the Apocalypse
Feb. 21st, 2017 02:24 pmThis week's Resolution Recipe: The Four Horsemen Cocktail.
"To construct this cocktail in foodie terms, the whiskey is the protein of the drink; the Amaro, the starch; the apricot liqueur, the vegetables; and the bitters, the seasoning or sauce."
1.5 oz whiskey or bourbon (I used whiskey)
0.75 oz Amaro (Averna; I used Ciociaro)
0.5 oz apricot liqueur or brandy (I used apricot brandy)
4 hard dashes Angostura bitters
Combine all the ingredients and stir with ice. Strain into a chilled glass and enjoy.
What worked: Yum.
What didn't: My version was probably more bitter than the original: I used whiskey instead of bourbon; Ciociaro is bitter-er than Averna; and I used apricot brandy instead of a quite sweet liqueur in the original (Giffard Abricot du Roussillon, which sounds like a good thing to have... once I finish off this bottle of brandy in several years). I liked it that way. It wasn't a pucker-bitter.
I thought about using Angostura Amaro, which actually does contain their bitters, but then it would have been only three horsemen.
Will I make it again? Most definitely.
