The wife just got off the phone with the mortgage company. We need to get payoff information from them to the escrow company, to settle the sale of the father-in-law's place.

"What documentation do you need?"
"Let's see... our records show that you're on the account that has been paying the mortgage the last several months. Just a death certificate will do - and we've already sent the payoff information out."

(astonished pause on our end)

Contrast that with the four-hour ordeal we went through with Wells Fargo to close out the accounts there. I know which financial institution I'd deal with again.

I have long ceased all dealings with Wells Fargo, at since their last merger.

Ignoring all the small charges they kept inventing to charge me, when I closed some accounts they gave me a lot of grief.

This is the company that wouldn't close my accounts for several months and tried to charge me for their error.

This is the company that actually charged me making a credit card payment and closing a credit card.

Needless to say, they don't get my business any more, although my parents still do business with them. Credit unions all the way for me.

Oh yeah, the wife uses Washington Mutual, who does seem to have good service.

I had the luxary of having my first car loan w/WF the butt munch bank. I was only 18 at the time but I learned how to fight very early with people that thought they knew what they were doing. They had so many screw ups on a simple car loan. First they gave me the due date of my first payment to be the next day, not 30 days later. Then they paid my loan off not the other person's loan off (yes we both had WF), then they called me for the other persons personal info because they needed to contact her, I refused and told them to look at my application...somthing so simple turned into such a mess...assholes...

YES, that's all it SHOULD take. Once notified of borrower's decease you note the temporary contact information (but keep the old info in case of fraud) etc. until you receive the Death Cert, then you change the title. Sounds like they're so on the ball they've verified who's actually making the payments. That's a tricky thing to do in most shops, particularly the big ones. Good for them!

I still have my ancient checking account with Wells Margo - I still get the actual checks back with the statement. They would dearly love me to close the account and open up a new one where I get no service and pay more fees, but I take a perfectly adolescent glee in keeping it. That, and I have fun forcing them to remove imposed fees. "Can you prove a service for that fee? "
