I’ve been driving the Mustang to work this week – it’s been hot enough that I’ll trade having air conditioning for the crappy gas mileage. The odd thing is that I actually prefer driving the Saturn wagon.

The Mustang is cushier, better sound system, lots more pickup... but I know the dimensions of the Saturn better, I’m more comfortable driving it, and I can parallel park it more easily. I’ve driven the wagon longer (we’ve had it since 1995 and it’s always been my primary vehicle) and this is probably the main reason. Although I drove the Mustang for six months when Dawn started school, and nothing really changed.

I don’t buy the “what you drive reveals your personality” marketing hype.

Really.

It doesn't make me feel insecure at all.

I'm glad someone told me not to buy that Cabriolet when I last needed a car.

One of my (male) cow-orkers used to drive a Del Sol. He got incessant crap for driving a "chick" car.

So, what IS a "chick car"?

I remember listening to "Car Talk" with Click and Clack, the Tappas (sp?) brothers, and they characterized the Mini Cooper as a "chick car." Personally, I don't understand what makes one versus the other in the car world, but I'm willing to learn since they did a poll (http://cartalk.cars.com/About/Guy-Chick-Finalists/) regarding this vitally important subject.

Back when I had the Volvo station wagon, I tried to name it Sven but was informed by a close friend that the car was female and I hadn't noticed. Evidently all station wagons are female; that extra storage space inside is what clinches it. So I ended up naming her Radegund. However, she was never a "chick car". She was more of a "wench car" (to quote a re-enactor friend, "Hey, I can fit a 7 foot spear diagonally in the back!"). My, that got Freudian all of a sudden.

My Nissan Maxima, named Max, is male. He's also gay.

The #1 guy car on the "Car Talk" site... the Ford Mustang. Which is what Dawn drives.

I still don't feel insecure.

Really.

I mean it.
