Maybe it's a generational thing - Elmo didn't exist when I was growing up - but I've never understood Elmo's appeal.
My favorite was either the Count, or Super Grover.
Not that I'm possessive towards Sesame Street, or anything. Just 'cause we first aired the same day, I mean.
