According to today's Wall Street Journal, Elmo became the most popular Sesame Street character in 1996 (edging out Cookie Monster).

Maybe it's a generational thing - Elmo didn't exist when I was growing up - but I've never understood Elmo's appeal.
My favorite was either the Count, or Super Grover.

Not that I'm possessive towards Sesame Street, or anything. Just 'cause we first aired the same day, I mean.

Me, neither. He always seemed like a younger Grover in desperate need of high dosages of Ritalin to me...

My favourite was Mr. Hooper. Always have been a little odd, me. But mostly, a suburb kid, I jsut wanted to live on Sesame Street, with all its urbanness...I hated those kids on there because they got to live in the city...

Which is why I live here now.

I think I may have watched the very first episode. I remember my dad making me sit down and watch this special new TV show...

Mr. Hooper was cool. Well, no, he wasn't, but.

I don't remember the first episode, since it was out 12 hours before I was...

I watch SS about once every two weeks, since we're keeping the kids under the 2hr max recommended, but I am now passably familiar with Elmo. I think I know why little kids -- and he's only 4, which means he's targeted to the 2-4 yr old set -- like him. He is pretty much slice-of-life from a preschooler's point of view. He stays in the same room (for his 20 minute slot on SS) but interacts with the bookcase, the TV, stuff out the window, the computer for email, and his fish. Sometimes he plays games. He laughs a lot.

Those are all real big things to a little kid.

...how could they abandon Cookie? I was in 6th grade when SS first aired on KQED, and the Cookie Monster was easily the most hilarious - remember his demonstration of a rectangle? He takes the shape and breaks it into mangled mess and says "See? It's a WRECK and a TANGLE -- WRECKTANGLE! HA HA HA!"

I also loved Bert, whose favorite show was "The Wonderful World of Pigeons" and whose favorite drink was unflavored soda water. (This was a decade before the advent of Perrier and the other designer waters.)

They didn't abandon Cookie Monster; he has a regular spot.

A few years ago, CTW decided that kids' attention-span was too short nowadays for the typical episode-long storylines that usually cropped up on the show. So, they decided to make the show more cookie-cutter. Big Bird was always intended as the avatar of the kids watching at home. (best example: asking the questions regarding the death of Mr. Hooper). Big Bird's outlook was equivalent to a 6-8 year old. Elmo, however, is more like a 3-5 year old, and they decided to focus on this as the main demographic. Yeah, Elmo annoys the hell out of me as well, but what annoys me even more is the aforementioned blunting of the show's focus. *sigh*
