Miss Beatrice had an early morning extended yowl session. Once we'd reassured her that we were in the bedroom, she jumped up and demanded pets. She then settled down against my hip and slept there for an hour! We're all in favor of that kind of threesome.

We just got back from a routine yearly vet visit. A new vet practice opened 10 minutes away, and since the SPCA is both understaffed and overscheduled, we gave this vet a try. Since they're looking for clients we got a quick appointment and there was no wait when we arrived. Bea is always going to be stressed but a short commute and wait helps a little bit.

No complaints or reasons not to return next year. (Miss Bea begs to differ.) Bea is a bit ample at 11.2 lbs, but otherwise in good health.

The last few days Miss Beatrice has been hopping up onto the bed before my alarm - anywhere from a couple minutes before to a couple hours. She will flop next to me and demand pets. This is fine when it's 10 minutes before, but less so when it's 3 AM...

This morning she did it three times. The first time I was on my side spooning the wife. Bea hopped up and placed her paw on my hip to let me know I needed to roll over so I could pay attention to her properly.

Yesterday was Miss Beatrice's third birthday, according to the shelter's guesstimate. We missed it as we were at Beltane.
She will get lots of cuddling over the next couple days. Which we would have given her anyway...

Miss Beatrice hopped up onto the bed around 2:30 AM. I obligingly rolled on my back, and she promptly settled in between my knees where she stayed for a couple hours. That's the second night in a row, so we'll see if tonight Establishes Tradition, or if Bea decides to do something different.

She hasn't wanted blanket fort basically since she bonded herself to the wife. So I will take any snuggles I can get.

Miss Beatrice likes fake-fur blankets. We bought several: one for the end of the bed, one for behind our armchairs where she likes to snooze, one for laps in the armchairs.

We've been a bit too warm in bed so we made the ritual seasonal change of the flannel sheets for cotton. So of course I was a bit too cold and I unfolded the bed fake-fur blanket as an additional layer. And then Miss Bea came up and snoozed between us, against my shins, for several hours.

...Looks like we're keeping the fake-fur blanket unfolded as long as she spends part of the night on our bed. That's something we want to encourage.

I made the mistake of looking at past posts; today was the day we had to put Galen to sleep three years ago. He was almost 17, had as good a life as we could give him, and it was time. But I still miss the boy sometimes.

This last weekend we attended the WCCS, which was back after a pandemic break. It usually rotates up and down the coast. It was less than an hour from us in a Girl Scout camp, making it even more convenient.
Semi-random notes from the event )

Miss Beatrice told us loudly how much she missed us, and I suspect she will be glued to the wife's lap for the next couple days. She also spent some of the night on our bed, which isn't that common for her.

Early this morning I dreamed I was brushing my teeth in bed (while sitting upright). Galen was perched on the back of my neck and shoulders in cat-loaf position.
I needed to get out of bed to rinse my mouth out - in cartoon fashion, I was frothing like I had a case of rabies - but I knew that when I forced Galen to move, he'd be gone since he's no longer with us.

This reads as much sadder than it was in the dream.

Miss Bea has discovered a new, exciting game: after she has gobbled 1/2 to 2/3 of her meal, she can sometimes get us to pick up individual pieces of her freeze-dried rabbit and toss them down the hall. Beatrice can then chase, catch, and devour her prey while making excited noises. And return for more.

It's adorable, but also good exercise for her. And it reinforces the hunting behaviors that vets say we should encourage in indoor cats so they don't sleep all the time.

Miss Bea was happily snoozing in the crook of my knee early this morning. I was happily snoozing too. Then the hard-wired, mandatory fire alarm went off around 2 AM. There was no fire. It kept turning itself back on as we frantically flapped a towel in front of it. Finally I got on a stepladder and swept around it, just in case there were any cobwebs with spider farts setting it off. I don't know if it had any effect, but at least it didn't go off a fourth time.

It took me an hour to get back to sleep. Beatrice had bolted underneath the bed in her usual "panic due to loud noises" scram, but when she came out half an hour after we returned to bed she did curl back up next to me for a while.

Add lack of sleep to the general feeling of work inertia today.

Miss Beatrice had her annual vet checkup yesterday. It was good from the vet's perspective in that she seems to be a perfectly healthy 2-year-old. Bea, not the vet. Perhaps slightly ample - she has gained a pound since last year and is now at 11 pounds, so we'll cut her meals by another gram and see how that goes. Also slight gingivitis so we'll test some dental chews. Hopefully Bea actually chews them rather than gulping them down (or snubbing entirely).

From Bea's perspective, Worst. Day. Ever. We had cancelled the cleaners' visit so she wouldn't be stressed out beforehand, which was a good call. She was severely unhappy about being among strangers - outside her house! She yowled the whole way there and once at the vet, her heart was racing from the stress. We got an exam room early to make it a bit easier on Bea, but she still spent the time either nose-deep in the wife's armpit or in the back of her carrier.

I did not sleep well. I woke up around 3 and did not get back to sleep. I am of course tired today and succumbed to a second cup of coffee. Boo.

Miss Beatrice jumped on the bed around 4:30 and snuggled with me for 20 minutes or so. She was happy enough with it that she drooled on my hand and side. Yay.

The alarm didn't go off this morning. Boo. But because I was unable to get back to sleep, I noticed it and didn't oversleep. Yay?

She seems to be continuing to do well as an only cat. She's still skittish/scared of most things that aren't us and that probably will never change, alas. We've been trying to schedule her annual checkup and shots but the SPCA is super-booked. (We're going there because it's close, and because all the local vets are full up and won't take new clients.)

This morning Miss Bea jumped onto the bed around 4:30 AM and demanded pets. I gave her a full rubdown and she drooled all over herself (and my hand). She seemed happy about it though.

Bea has linked the oven hood fan going on to the (occasional) smoke alarm, which understandably panics her - so she hides when I turn on the fan just in case. Sigh. I am using the fan to try to avoid the smoke alarm, cat.

I got a COVID booster yesterday. In and out pretty quickly. I forgot to bring my vax card (duh) but the tech filled out a new one for me. No side effects so far except a slightly sore shoulder, which is consistent with my previous reactions as I only got them from the first shot.

Miss Beatrice jumped onto the bed during the night and slept on my chest for a few hours. She left and then came back later to settle on my shins for an hour. I'd like this to be a regular thing, but it hasn't been in the past. I didn't sleep well but I can't blame that on the cat; she did her best to emit snorons.

Miss Beatrice had a bad day yesterday. First the cleaners, who came into the house, and to make matters worse, ran a vacuum cleaner. Then after I got home, she got scared by something-or-other and bolted - but got her leg tangled in a cord plugged into the wall, so it wrapped around her leg and she couldn't escape. She was yowling and hissing, with her tail in full bottle-brush mode. We converged on Bea and the wife picked her up and held her, while I untangled the cord. Then the wife held her and we both petted her gently until she relaxed. (We figured that was less traumatic than letting her bolt under the bed to hide.)

No lasting harm done, but sheesh.

It had been a long time since we went to an SCA event - Twelfth Night 2020 in fact. Significantly longer since we camped; during my exchequer tenure (drink!) we mostly stayed in a hotel, because I didn't really have the bandwidth to deal with setting up and breaking down. Or the time, since I spent much of the event running around doing the job. I'm not actually sure what event we camped last. Maybe West-An Tir 2018?
Abbreviated for length and rambling )

Tired today - I could have used a vacation day to recover from my vacation. It was good though.

We bought an auto-feeder for Miss Bea. We've been rationing her food since she exited kittenhood (the vet's term was she was a bit "ample" with free-feeding) and now she gets 23 g of dried rabbit twice a day. Bea devours it within a few minutes, although the first bite is almost always her flipping a chunk out of the bowl and munching it a couple feet away.

Because we give her freeze-dried food rather than kibble, we can't use the vertical dispensers. So we went with a five-bowl setup that we program to rotate twice a day. It's slightly too deep for her size but she's made it work. And she's now starting to cue off the slight sound of the motor running when it rotates as food time.

This will make it easier for going away; she won't be able to eat a weekend's worth of food all on Friday afternoon anymore. I expect she'll still complain about us being gone, of course.

Last night we met Ken and CJ for drinks at Local Edition, a cocktail bar based in the Hearst Building. (They have antique typewriters and old newspapers as decor.) We've been there a number of times before.

It was good to get out and be social with friends. The drinks were good as usual. After a couple rounds we decided to hit Tadich for dinner. It meant a 30-minute wait but eh, more conversation. I had grilled swordfish and it was very good.

We didn't get home until after 9 PM and Miss Beatrice let us know how unhappy she was. She was actually a little hoarse from having yowled during our absence. Pandemic kitty hasn't had us gone much, especially when she is waiting for dinner.

I'm running a bit bleary today, but it was worth it.

I dreamt that we were at a 12th Night-like SCA event at a hotel. We had brought Miss Beatrice and she had gotten loose. We were frantically running around the hotel trying to find her.

So when Miss Bea jumped up onto the bed and woke me from the dream, she got extra pets.
madbaker: (Galen)
Beatrice jumped onto the bed around midnight or 1. She curled up in the triangle formed by my crotch and one bent leg, and stayed there until around 5.
