Dinner last night: a fresh green salad, Dungeness crab, garlic butter, sourdough French bread.

Are you up for a comparison of Dungeness, Snow and King crabs. I don't have a clue of their relative merits or demerits.

I can't compare all of them all that well, but I can say that King Crab is the richest crab meat I've tasted. It's very expensive, and rightly so ... wow. (I had some when I was in Duch Harbor, Alaska -- one of the, if not the biggest King Crab harvesting places in the world, and they're not harvested from a lot of places -- had a whole leg -- about 3' long -- placed in front of me -- eeeek!)

There's something rather science fiction-esque about basically a bug with three foot legs.

Yeah. The worst part is that it tastes so darn good ...

You thought King actually had a richer taste than Dungeness? Hm, apparently my memories from 30 years ago are faulty... we had fresh King crab in AK and although it was terrific, we thought Dungeness was superior in flavor. King certainly gives you more meat in those enormous round legs.

Snow is decidedly inferior to both, I think.

Well, I haven't done a side-by-side comparison of the two, but I did just have it on the cruise in June, and was blown away (again) by how rich it was. Even without the butter ... it's been awhile since I've had Dungeness, and perhaps there's some "Alaska Pride" thing going on in my fuzzy head, but to date, the richest tasting crab I've ever had was Alaska King. I also haven't tried some of the many varieties out there, but of the ones I've tried ...
